Dr Wismyt: Why you don’t want to work at Sheffield Hallam University

Well the dirt is out, staff bullying is rife at Sheffield Hallam University, it’s offical. Nearly a whopping 100 staff working there reported that they had been bullied ‘always’, ‘often’ or ’sometimes’.

And if your not being bullied, harrangued or belittled at Hallam, then your getting stressed out - the report also highlights the need for ‘urgent action’ over staff stress levels. All of this is hardly an advertisment to attract the academic cream to Hallam’s less than hallowed halls.

In fact, Sheffield Hallam must be pretty pissed off that their internal survey report got leaked, some disgruntled staff getting some payback on their managers no doubt. However, in a flourish of doublethink which would make Orwell proud, the VC Prof Green tried to make a virtue from a necessity by arguing the mere fact the survey was conducted proves how serious Sheffield Hallam takes the matter .. yeah right, wonder if they would have sanctioned it in hindsight. No doubt their trawling through the email system right now on a witch hunt for the whistle blower.

And of course, if it’s such a lousy place to work, what’s it like to study there?

  1. Pierre-Joseph Proudhon Says:

The bullying of academics follows a pattern of horrendous, Orwellian elimination rituals, often hidden from the public. Despite the anti-bullying policies (often token), bullying is rife across campuses, and the victims (targets) often pay a heavy price. “Nothing strengthens authority as much as silence.” Leonardo da Vinci - “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men [or good women] do nothing.” Winston Churchill.

Frankly, you really don’t need to worry about the state of Sheffield Hallam’s academics - your abysmal grasp of SPAG rather suggests that you wouldn’t get a job there anyway.

    Consider, for example, your commments:
“its such a lousy place to work” (short for “it is”, therefore you should be using it’s) ditto, “its official”.
“wonder if they would of sanctioned it” (you are using a past tense here so it should read “would have” not “would of”)
“their trawling through” (their is the plural possessive pronoun, what you intended to say was they’re - short for they are)
“if your not” (as above, this time “your” is a singular possessive pronoun, used instead of the correct you’re, short for you are)

I would suggest that you concern yourself less with staff bullying and more with what your lack of knowledge of basic English does to the poor so and so who, in addition to being bullied rotten, has to deal with the misery of marking your illiterate maunderings.

“bullied, harrangued or belittled at Hallam” - oh just grow up! Try getting a job outside the sector then see how bullied you are. Truth is, the reason many of the staff at Hallam (and I understand this is not confined to Hallam) are overworked is that 80% of the staff are carrying a significant minority who simply refuse to accept that life has moved on from the lazy days of the 70’s. Management’s failure to address this issue leads to “bullying” by hard-working colleagues who are sick to death with having to sort out the shit left behind by these wasters.
